Dissonant Futures is an ongoing collaborative project of video artist Ian Winters, pianist and improviser Myra Melford, and composer Evelyn Ficarra. Initiated as part of Yerba Buena Center for Arts Dissident Futures exhibit in Jan 2014, this was followed by a research residency / performance at Sussex University in Feb. 2014, an invited research residency and performance at Atlantic Center for the Arts as a joint Master Artist Residency in 2016 and continues with ongoing research.
Dissonant Futures is a gallery installation and structured improvisational performance using prepared and amplified piano with live video projection and custom made video controllers in an effort to re-imagine the piano as a 21st century instrument. Following is an excerpt from the 2016 performance at Atlantic Center for the Arts
At YBCA this project was part of YBCA’s larger project with Melford for which YBCA was recently awarded a two-year grant from the Doris Duke Foundation to fund an artist residency with Myra Melford, winner of the prestigious 2012 Alpert Award in the Arts for Music, the 2013 Guggenheim Fellowship, and numerous others.
At Sussex University this project was part of the Department of Music’s ongoing program of supporting visiting artists and researchers.
